Millions of South Africans say goodbye to anti-apartheid icon Winnie Madikizela-Mandela as she was laid to rest with full state honours at a stadium funeral in Soweto on Saturday.
During her husband Nelson Mandela's 27-year incarceration, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela campaigned tirelessly for his release and for the rights of black South Africans, suffering years of detention, banishment and arrest.
Crowds have been gathering outside Winnie Madikizela-Mandela's home following the veteran political campaigner's death on Monday.
The family spokesperson says the former wife of Nelson Mandela, once described as the "Mother of the Nation" by many South Africans, died "surrounded by her loved ones."
Members of the clergy, parents and anti-apartheid struggle stalwarts will mediate a process of consensus on Friday. The varsity is expected to resume classes in the following week.
