A brutal cold wave that has killed at least twelve people moved eastward after bringing temperatures in US Midwest lower than those in Antarctica.
One of the biggest icebergs on record, roughly the size of Delaware in the US or Bali in Indonesia, broke away from Antarctica sometime between July 10 and 12, creating an extra hazard for ships around the continent as it breaks up.
The 5,000-square-kilometre chunk of ice has nearly completely broken off the Larsen C ice shelf, the fourth largest in Antarctica. When it does, it will shrink Larsen C by about 10 percent and leave it with the smallest area ever recorded.
