"The mortar fired from Afghanistan hit the house of local villager Fazal Ghani. He along with his wife and five other members of the family died on spot," a senior Pakistani official says. The dead included three women, three children and a man.
In 2017, Islamabad constructed a fence along its more-than 2,600-kilometre border with Afghanistan in a bid to quell terrorism, leading to soaring school dropout rates in the area. Still, some continue to fight for their education.
Officials say at least two people died. Local media reports a higher death toll. The border is not the only disputed issue between the neighbours. Both sides also accuse each other of providing militants with safe havens.
