The Mendocino Complex fire surpassed the Thomas Fire, which burned 117,639 hectares in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties in 2017, as officials say the fire is expected to burn for the rest of the month.
San Diego-based engineer Cory Iverson died fighting the Thomas Fire which has blackened almost 250,000 acres since it broke out ten days ago.
The Thomas fire, already the US west coast state's fifth-largest wildland blaze on record, is still threatening Santa Barbara, Carpinteria, Summerland and Montecito, according to fire officials.
Wildfires burned numerous structures and thousands of acres according to fire officials. On Thursday, wind-swept blazes engulfed retirement areas as well as racehorse stables in Southern California.
