Theodore McCarrick, an influential leader in the American Church for years, was expelled from the priesthood in 2019 after a Vatican investigation found him guilty of molesting both minors and adults.
The decision comes after a Vatican trial found former US cardinal Theodore McCarrick guilty of sexually abusing minors and adults. He is the highest profile figure in the Catholic church to be dismissed in nearly 100 years.
The resignation of Los Angeles bishop Monsignor Alexander Salazar is the latest in a string of cases of alleged misconduct against bishops to come to light this year, following the scandal of ex-Cardinal Theodore McCarrick.
Pope Francis has appealed to Catholics around the world to help root out the scourge of child sexual abuse. In an unprecedented letter, he said "we did not act in a timely manner, realizing the magnitude ... of the damage done to so many lives."
