Ecuadorian authorities report fresh clashes in Guayaquil prison days after the country's deadly riots in the same jail that killed 118 inmates.
Ecuador President Guillermo Lasso declares a state of emergency in the country's prison system after deadly violence killed at least 22 inmates in jails in southern Guayas province and Cotopaxi province, south of capital Quito.
The inmates released were serving time for minor offences. Prisoners fearing contagion with the virus in jam-packed prisons have staged several riots.
The prison, which was built to house 2,500 inmates but is estimated to hold more than 10,000, has more than 600 cases of Covid-19 infections,
Prisoners fought each other with handguns and knives, which were seized after the fight, said the state's Public Security Ministry.
At least 52 prisoners have been killed by other inmates during a riot at a prison in the northern Brazilian state of Para, authorities say.
According to an interior ministry official, the riot started when one inmate thought to be a member of Daesh attacked a prison guard.
It was the latest deadly riot in Mexico's chronically overcrowded prisons where inmates often have de facto control, and contraband weapons and drugs are rife.
The riot began in a prison complex in Amazonas state on Sunday following a fight between two drug gangs resulting in the death of at least 56 inmates.
