Communist authorities in then-Czechoslovakia banned Kundera's books and stripped him of citizenship after the publication of a book in which he called then-Czechoslovak president Gustav Husak "the president of forgetting."
Six books from Europe, South America and the Middle East are finalists for the Man Booker International Prize for fiction in translation. The winner of the $65,000 prize – split between author and translator – will be announced May 21 in London.
The military novelist wrote more than 200 books under several pen names and sold millions of copies.
