Cynomolgus monkeys can cost up to $10,000 each and have been in demand for coronavirus vaccine research, according to the New York Times.
It's, however, unclear how long such immunity will last in humans. It will be necessary to wait months, or even years, to know if the millions of people infected at the start of the pandemic are protected from re-infection.
With the arrival of the coronavirus, it "will be taking strict measures to prevent contact with the macaques," the government said in a statement.
