Since pro-Russian groups declared their separatism in eastern Ukraine in 2014, violating Ukrainian territorial integrity, the region has seen heavy clashes between Kiev and the separatists.
On the sidelines of the G20 summit in Hamburg, the leaders of France, Germany and Russia discussed the implementation of ceasefire agreements in eastern Ukraine where government forces have been battling pro-Russian rebels since 2014.
The Minsk peace agreement, brokered by France and Germany, was signed by Russia and Ukraine in February 2015 but a recent uptick in fighting has led to fresh efforts to de-escalate the violence.
