Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has signed a deal on expanding autonomy for the Muslim minority in a bid to end nearly half a century of unrest in the south. The new law will go into effect if it is passed, as expected, by a regional referendum.
The Philippine military said the US is providing technical support to end the siege of Marawi by the so-called Maute group, which took over large parts of the city late last month. But President Duterte said he did not seek support from Washington.
