Officials say at least 32 people are dead and some 30 others are missing after landslides in Maharashtra, with rescuers reaching affected areas as rains slowed and water levels came down.
Heavy rains in parts of four Indian states – Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat – have forced more than 1.2 million people to leave their homes, mostly for government-run relief camps.
A joint rescue operation was carried out by the Indian Air Force, Indian Navy, and National Disaster Response Force at the flood-ravaged parts of western and southern India.
Floods and landslides caused by heavy downpours wreaked havoc in the region, killing at least 100 people in a week. Officials warned the death toll could rise.
