The Vikram lander of Chandrayaan 2, or Moon Chariot 2, was due to land in the lunar South Pole region, a region the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) says is "completely unexplored".
The spacecraft looked set for launch from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, but the countdown was halted 56 minutes and 24 seconds before the planned lift-off on Sunday at 2121 GMT.
The $141 million moon mission or Chandrayaan-2 mission, scheduled to touch down on September 6 or 7, will map the moon's surface and search for water.
