Sony re-released the superhero film with 11 minutes of extra footage that proved to be exciting to some comic book fans, bringing in $6 million from 3,935 theatres over the weekend.
Sony's "Bullet Train" held the top spot for the second week running in the North American box office during a relatively flat mid-August period of moviegoing.
The Sony Pictures release, starring Brad Pitt, will need to maintain its momentum in the coming weeks as it tries to break even or turn a profit.
The movies will hit Netflix after they have finished their run in theatres and been made available for home viewing via video-on-demand.
