The supermoon phenomenon occurs when a full moon is within 10 percent of its closest distance to the Earth.
The triple system, called HR 6819, is perhaps three times closer than the previous closest-known black hole.
Solar Orbiter was made in Europe, along with nine science instruments. NASA provided the 10th instrument and arranged the late-night launch from Cape Canaveral.
Scientists for the first time have detected water in the atmosphere of an Earth-like planet orbiting a distant star.
Both countries will be under the narrow, 6,000-mile long band that will experience a total eclipse when the Moon will completely block the Sun.
The team that observed the black hole works under the Event Horizon Telescope project, an international collaboration that tries to directly observe the immediate environment of a black hole using a global network of Earth-based telescopes.
Star gazers got a 'twofer' Sunday night in a rare alignment of the sun, Earth and moon to produce a total lunar eclipse known as a 'Super Blood Wolf Moon.'
The so-called "blood moon," when it turns a deep red, was visible at different times in Australia, Africa, Asia, Europe and South America when the sun, Earth and moon lined up perfectly, casting Earth's shadow on the moon.
Scientists say have spotted what they say appears to be a large salt-laden lake under ice on the southern polar plain of Mars, a body of water they called a possible habitat for microbial life.
But the scientists emphasised there could be nonbiological explanations for both discoveries made by the Curiosity rover at a site called Gale crater, leaving the issue of Martian life a tantalising but unanswered question.
Some 65 million light-years from Earth, NGC1052-DF2 – "DF2" for short – is about the same size as our Milky Way, but has 100 to 1,000 times fewer stars.
Much of the world will see a rare lunar phenomenon combining a blue moon, a supermoon and a total lunar eclipse which has not happened since 1982 and will not happen until 2037.
